Themed Land Concept and Wayfinding Copy
Camelot Court Themed Land Concept by Shelby Brooks, Anastasia Edry, Matteo Esposito, and Edwin Fuentes (Story by Shelby Brooks)

Conceptual Overview: Step into the true love story of King Arthur and Queen Guinevere, smells of carts, bustle of the village, clanking of knights–but envy rears up out of the darkness. A twist on the timeless tale, Arthur’s brother Lancelot–dark, brooding–challenges King Arthur to the thrills of a clash in a nighttime spectacular, a boat ride in a ghostly underground, jousts of neverending loops (carousel), to win not just the throne of England but the very love of the woman at his side.

Backstory: Brothers Arthur and Lancelot played on the clifftops of North Cornwall, England, swords kid-sized and armor too big. In the castle’s hallways, they’d act out battles for the throne–always ending with Lancelot’s swordtip at Arthur’s neck, only to relent.

Irked to be bested so often, Arthur spent his growing-up years fencing, in lessons, mopping his brow. Even so, he’d take breaks to chat with his classmates about politics, war, and new ways they could change the world. Out of the corner of his eye, he’d spot Lancelot in a tower’s crooked-teethed shadow, steadily practicing, faster than him by one breath.

Despite the shadows, Arthur’s sunny smile caught him a following of young people from the towns nearby. They’d met up one evening at a local tavern, The Once and Future King, punching Arthur’s arm, pretending to fence like their instructor. Arthur laughed but stumbled, clattering a serving tray to the floor. A hush. Arthur’s eyes lifted, in apology, to lock with Guinevere’s.

With a prince kneeling before her on the dirty tavern floor, Guinevere tapped him on the head with her rolled-up napkin set and smirked to say, “Let’s not have that happen again, sir.” She bobbed a brief curtsy on her way back to the kitchen to get a new tray. A small voice inside Arthur murmured, “She’s my queen.”

Little by little, Arthur missed fencing lessons. He skipped lessons of all kinds. He bought more than a fair share of daily specials from the tavern. Guinevere lost her job at The Once and Future King, for one too many trips into the country with a bright-eyed prince. In less than a year’s time, Guinevere accepted his hand in marriage.

Unbeknownst to Arthur, the same night he tripped against a tray, Lancelot had waited outside the tavern’s back door, strings of late-night dates along the cliff’s edges in the last two years, a deepening darkness Guinevere couldn’t resist. His eyes flashed at Guinevere in feverish dreams, the first weeks of marriage to Arthur.

Only one person continued to imagine the brothers as they were–playing on the cliffs, butting heads in overlarge helmets–their father. Within a year of the marriage, their father, the King, fell ill and passed away. Grieving, the brothers fell into a strange habit–meeting for fencing lessons together. Guinevere hesitated to stop by, but became concerned after the matches became more and more heated. After one of these intense sessions, Lancelot threaded his fingers in hers as he passed, Arthur’s smile a little less full. “Wait for me at the final battle,” she read to herself, the crumpled note in hand.

With enough to keep his mind busy, Arthur was soon appointed King of England, Guinevere at his side as Queen. The new rulers invited a new jester into the court, a welcome source of joy in times of grief and strife. Lancelot frequented the lower chambers of the castle, preferring the dark, the quiet. Guinevere would occasionally see Lancelot at the servants’ door, a carpenter of sorts for toys for the servants’ children.

In his new era as ruler, King Arthur remembered the thoughts he’d pressed on his classmates–a way to change the world. He made the kingdom’s first Round Table, a group of knights made up of his former fencing partners, traveling knights, and his brother Lancelot. Guinevere, as head of food services, insisted on serving food for the knights’ meetings, a way to serve others, but she found herself increasingly ensnared in the stare of the brother she’d met at the cliff’s edge. The jester noticed King Arthur’s meetings at odd hours with carts at the gates, flashing gold. The jester’s role was not to govern a country, or point out debts in the country, so not a word was spoken.

The land opens with the climactic event, barely after the new king is crowned–Arthur discovers Lancelot’s love for Guinevere, and perhaps even more painful, Guinevere’s love for Lancelot. We can make the land family-friendly: A lightning strike illuminates the castle’s tallest tower. Silhouettes are visible in the window of a lower chamber, a crown on one person’s head. A flash of sword on the other’s hip. Lancelot kisses the palm of Guinevere’s hand. Arthur, outside the castle, rushes into a crowd (guests), who bunch up confused by their king’s sudden change.

“Out!” Arthur cries. “Out! Who is heir to the throne?” he bellows, beats of sweat clumping the hair framing his face. Could the guests hear the heartbeat of their king? Was he their king?
